Episode I Script (CFSS) = Cropped Full Screen Shot Ext. Space After Crawl, use entire shot of ship approaching and heading toward TF ships. Int. Qui Gonn's ship Reverse the first two interior shots-- start favoring Qui Gonn, Q: "Captain, tell them we wish to board at... Cut to wide shot of all passengers Q: "once..." Captain: "Yes Sir." Cut to Med. Shot of Captain as she leans toward controls-- cut away before she talks-- Ext. Space Use whole shot of ship descending toward TF Starship. Bring up Sound F/X. No dialogue. Int. Landing dock Use frame-rate to slow down the landing and add more majestic music for truly awesome Star Wars landing (like Millenium Falcon landing on Death Star) Int. Hallway TC13 greets the Jedi. Int. Waiting Room TC 13 leads Jedi into the waiting room and leaves. The Jedi flip back their hoods-- (Change if possible: using the Full Screen edition, can we crop the same shot and create a close up of Qui Gonn as he flips back his hood? It would be great-- even if we can just use the Full Screen footage to create a closer shot of both of them as they reveal themselves. The current shot favors Obi Wan -- since he's the one OT character we're meeting. That's not appropriate for this edit if we can get around it). Can we improve the musical sting of their reveal? Harps isn't much of a cue. Then back to the master shot as they walk across and say their lines at the window. (But again, depending on what's possible with the Full Screen version -- close ups of Qui Gonn's bored expression here would help reinforce his malaise about this assignment.) ... INT. CONTROL ROOM (From the Jedi saying "the negotiations will be short.") CUT to just one (CFSS) close up of a hand hitting a console with droid icons (from the Gungan battle) -- the icon "stands" Cut to: INT. HALLWAY Droids with weapons march toward camera (add Imperial March type music -- the hammer is coming down). The idea is that the Jedi are about to be assassinated by their hosts without us knowing who they are or why they want to kill these guys. Use the two shots that currently follow the destruction of the Jedi's ship. First shot: Marching droids. Then, just a couple beats of the Side angle wide shot: The droids reach the door and halt. Third shot (grabbed from a few shots later): Closer front view of droids (continuity problem of yellow droid is there -- can we crop him out?) MUSIC HITTING CRESCENDO... then holding a suspenseful note that continues-- INT. WAITING ROOM -- ...as the Door opens-- (suspense, suspense) -- and TC13 enters with drinks. Jedi say lines; Qui Gonn takes the drink. MUSIC remains on the tense side, but still holding back-- INT. LANDING DOCK/QUI GONN'S SHIP The MUSIC does a sly lurch as the gun descends in the hanger -- the crew panics -- the gun fires -- the ship EXPLODES and the music hits its full throttle action tempo-- INT. WAITING ROOM The Jedi react to the explosion. The gas comes in. They hold their breath. INT. HALLWAY (Remembering that the droids are already at the door), cut to them opening the door and seeing the gas. Adjust their interaction per BOTF. TC13 comes out. The Jedi emerge. Battle Use all the battle footage in one stroke as the battle continues all the way to Obi Wan force pushing a group of droids away. INT. CONTROL DECK NOTE: ALL DIALOGUE IS TEMP (Use footage from talking to TC13 scene) (CFSS) Over Nute's shoulder, favoring flunky, hiding Nute's face. Flunky: "It has been a long time since you killed a Jedi. Let the droids handle it." Nute: "You prevent me from killing them?" CUT AWAY: the Jedi cut one more Droid down BACK TO SCENE (next shot favoring Flunky off Nute's shoulder) (CFSS) Flunky: "Your safety is vital-- The entire Trade Federation rests on your--" CUT AWAY: the Jedi cut another Droid down BACK TO SCENE Nute: "Get out of my sight." Flunky shrinks away -- using the "stunted slime" shot -- this is the first shot we get of Nute's profile. He turns toward camera (cut to CFSS on movement; add Nute Music Cue) -- cut away before Sidious image creeps in too much-- Nute: "Keeping me from my enemy endangers us all." Cut to shot of communications flunky with the mask Com Flunky: "We've lost their transmission sir." Next shot: Nute spins from the screen (currently where he says "What's going on down there?"). Nute: "Lead the Jedi here. I will show you what a Nemoidian is capable of!" Note Flunky #2 was in background of "stunted slime" shot. He now talks to Nute as they walk across the bridge toward the door together. Flunky #2: "Please, your Lordship, reconsider. If the Jedi should get lucky and harm you, our Federation will be destroyed by the Republic. We have arranged so much to make this invasion legal. Now is not the time to jeopardize things for sport. [an order to the driods] Seal the bridge." Nute: (Gesturing to the droids) "I will not forget this. You waste our time. The door is no match for Jedi." Flunky #2: "Send for Destroyers. These Jedi will fall quickly." The door closes on the bridge, sealing them in. INT. HALLWAY Obi Wan and Qui Gonn arrive outside the bridge. Q attacks the door. INT. CONTROL DECK (The shot where Nute says "That will hold them" as Flunky #2 stares at the door) Flunky #2 (awed tone) "Close the blast door." Nute (going crazy with desire to fight) "Let them in, the doors will not hold!" Too late, the blast door shots-- stopping Q's blade. INT. HALLWAY Qui Gonn thinks, plunges into the door again-- Force theme (no changes here for me) INT. CONTROL DECK Door gets hot. Flunky #2 points "They are still coming through!" Nute: "Why are you protecting me? I can smell them. Let them in!" INT. HALLWAY Qui Gonn continues -- INT. CONTROL DECK Flunky #2 turns to ask "Where are those Destroyer Droids?" Nute gives him dirty look. INT. HALLWAY Destroyer Droids arrive. (still no changes for me) The Jedi run. INT. CONTROL DECK Nute and Flunky #2 watch Jedi run. ("No match for Destroyer Droids") Communications Guy says "Sir, a transmission from the planet" Queen Amidala contacts them. Talk to Queen. Threaten her blatantly and brutally. End transmission. Nute orders invasion to begin "we will conquer them now." Cut to: Communications guy interrupts: The Jedi are in ventilation shaft. Cut to: Shot of Nute where he whips around and says "Close the blast doors!" Nute: "I want them! Bring them to me!" ... From Nute shouting for the Jedi's capture, we CUT TO: Ext. Amidala's castle -- establishing Int. Amidala's castle Wide shot. Then panning wide as Palpatine speaks -- gets cut off. Amidala asks "What happened?" Cut before we pan to Tanaka-- Governor dialogue: "Communications block means-- ...Invasion!" (dialogue as is -- I'm too lazy to type it) Wide shot -- Amidala: "The Federation wouldn't go that -- " (cut out Tanaka "checking the generator") Cut to Tanaka standing as he finishes his next line (which we also cut) -- (Amidala finishes): "...far." Tanaka turns as Amidala continues: "We must continue to rely on Negotiations." Governor: "Negotiations? Etc. Where are the ambassadors?" Cut to Amidala: "I will not condone a course that leads us to war!" (This is a little more mature version of the scene without Tanaka's pointless interruptions and opinions). CUT TO: EXT. STARSHIP - establishing shot Trick: f/x "flip" this shot so the droid ship is on Left with landing ships flying from it-- Musical sting. Only show for a second or two -- keep droid ship the focus, then cut -- INT. DROID LOADING HANGER Qui Gonn and Obi Wan fly out of vent into hanger. Jedi see droids loading. "We'll go with them." "Negotiations were short." CUT TO: EXT. NABOO Remaining portion of Droid loading ships flying in space -- toward planet (NOT reversed) The Droid ships hit ground EXT. LOADING SHIPS Droids unload. Droid Captain receives orders from Flunky and Nute: "Destroy everything in your path. Cause as much destruction as possible. We will conquer this world as our own. The Republic has been a thorn in our side long enough...!" EXT. FOREST SF/X -- ADD SOUNDS OF BLASTERS AND EXPLOSIONS THROUGHOUT First shot -- The Animals run from something we can't see (currently the third shot) Second shot -- The Transports crash through the trees Third shot -- From above, Qui Gonn runs ahead of the transports Forth shot -- From ahead of the transport -- Qui Gonn runs toward camera Fifth shot -- Close on Qui Gonn looking mad Sixth shot -- Med shot of Jar Jar in the way Seventh shot -- Close on Jar Jar panicking. Eighth-Tenth shot -- Qui Gonn tackles Jar Jar (cut faster -- from behind Jar Jar/from behind Qui Gonn/back to Jar Jar's back as they hit the deck -- it's a tackle; they fall FAST) Eleventh shot -- The Transport rides over them Qui Gonn stands -- cut to a CFSS of Jar Jar standing to avoid the "flip up" and to shorten this shot. They turn to leave -- Cut away while the Transports are still near. LEAVE SOUNDS VERY LOUD -- TRANSPORTS ARE ALL AROUND. ... [ADD SOUND F/X OF BLASTING, BOOMING, DESTRUCTIVE DROID TRANSPORTS REMAINING ALWAYS NEARBY -- until we get to the lake shore with Jar Jar -- then the sounds are muted and distant, but STILL PRESENT] EXT. FOREST The transport travels over Jar Jar and Qui Gonn -- they lie on the ground as it recedes. They move, rising to stand and we CUT To a Droid riding a flying glider and shooting (the one who's chasing Obi Wan) CUT: To Qui Gonn, lighting his saber and bouncing the blast back at the Droid, Obi Wan running closer. CUT: To Qui Gonn deflecting blasts back at more droids as Obi Wan runs closer. Camera follows debris into bushes Jar Jar stands between Qui Gonn and Obi Wan -- speaks. Obi Wan asks what's this. Qui Gonn says "a local. Let's go before more droids come." CUT away as Obi Wan crosses frame, before Jar Jar starts his clown faces and speaking... (The effect is that this attack is closer to where the tackle happened and makes the threat of the droids stay more imminent. The backgrounds match surprisingly well when cut on all this movement). CUT TO: them all running together and Jar Jar offering to take them to a city. They stop and talk to Jar Jar. (keep it going until Qui Gonn's line: "...us there?") and CUT TO: over Qui Gonn's shoulder on Jar Jar. Let Jar Jar talk until "...me going back there" He's saying something like: "I can take you there if you have the courage to face Boss Nass -- he will not be kind. He knows things... But it's safer there than out here..." Let a rising musical sting cue us for a dangerous decision as we WIPE... To: Jar Jar leading the Jedi to the river bank When Jar Jar leaps in the air, CUT to the Jedi putting in their mouth pieces so we don't see the silly triple-gainer dive. Then get us underwater using everything except the shot where Jar Jar pokes his head out of the water -- he jumps in the water and disappears and the Jedi have to follow... Under water use everything except OMIT the close up of Obi Wan -- keep things on Qui Gonn. ... (Entering Gunga city) INT. GUNGA CITY STREET [Music is threatening and mysterious. It gets darker as we go] Q and O squish through the door and walk inside. CUT to the shot of them all walking to the stairs, seen from behind. A guard runs up from screen left as they reach the bottom of the stairs. CUT to the reverse shot of them all at the bottom of the stairs as a second Guard runs up. This guard has his lance down-- he zaps Jar Jar (shave a few frames out so the zap is more assertive and removes that pause). Jar Jar jumps back-- CUT to Close of the Guard threatening them. He says all his lines (as shot). Cut to: Q looking around, reacting (a FS crop of his first reaction shot as he enters the city). CUT to the pan across Gunga city where the citizens all take notice of the Jedi (start the pan after we already can't see Q or JJ or the guards). This pan is our last shot of Gunga before we cut to: EXT. GRASSY FIELDS The Droid army approaches Naboo. ADD SOUND F/X OF EXPLOSIONS AND LASER BLASTS EXT. NABOO CITY Then ships fly over the Castle Then (this is tricky) ships fly over the streets, seen from below as debris flies through the air (This shot is from the parade at the end -- two groups of ships speed by as confetti falls and the camera tilts downward) INT. CASTLE Then we see the droid army through a window, approaching... Then we see a wide shot of the Queen looking out the window Then cut to the medium shot of the Queen, as she lets her head fall forward in defeat... STILL HEARING BOOMS LASERS AND SCREAMS INT. BOSS NASS CHAMBER First the establishing shot from outside, then The next four shots of Boss Nass talking without cutting to the Jedi for response. Let him get a real wind on -- he's upset that the Jedi council seems so foolish as to only send two Jedi when the Galaxy is in the balance. The Gungans will face their deaths with pride. Cut in a shot of Qui Gonn reacting surprised and/or worried, but no talking (we'll have to create it if we can with the FS). Nass continues. Finally Qui Gonn says his line: "The Droid Army's about to attack the Naboo. We must warn them." Boss Nass continues. He's talking about the prophecy of the Force. He's wise and the music and dialogue support that (once we add it ) He uses all his good looking dialogue shots without interruption until he finally says "be gone with you" and the Jedi turn to leave, "We go in peace." (OMIT the head shaking, please) CUT to Jar Jar being released and the Jedi going up the stairs. OMIT the "What's a bongo?" dialogue or anything else about stopping for Jar Jar. Boss Nass controls what happens here -- the Jedi know it and go along. EXT. OTAH GUNGA The bongo swims out and Jar Jar talks to the Jedi. Leave in the "You were banished because you were clumsy" stuff. We're going to borrow MagFan's dialogue strategy here. A fish takes interest in them -- just when it's about to shoot out it's tongue at them -- Qui Gonn turns and notices it -- and it gets CHOMPED by a bigger fish. "There's always a bigger fish" "Head for that outcropping" The Bongo disappears and we wipe... ... EXT. NABOO CITY Establishing shot -- cut away before Bongo surfaces INT. PALACE Nute marches Queen down stairs and hands them over to droids EXT. PALACE They march down the steps Out across the quad Seen from a balcony, they march from right to left Seen again from the balcony, a silhouette passes before camera (Qui Gonn -- shave this shot as much as possible while still feeling natural) Ground level shot as Queen marches through alley Reverse shot as Jedi leap off gangway-- Jedi dispatch droids and lead Queen away - talk to Governor; Panaka leads them to the Hanger INT. HANGER Establish hanger Panaka looks in (cut his line -- leave some of his lip movement if you need to, but he looks in and then looks at QG) CUT TO QG turning from having looked (no "That won't be a problem") he talks to the Queen Play the rest out -- except OMIT the lines where Amidala consults Padme -- Go from Governor saying "Senator Palpatine will need your help" to Amidala saying "Then I will plead our case to the Senate." They march into the hanger and OW says he'll take care of the pilots QG marches up to the yellow droid -- before it says "halt" CUT TO The yellow droid close up as he leans forward to say "You're under arrest" QG cuts loose as does OW and they get everyone on the ship INT QUEEN'S SHIP COCKPIT Shave the shot of the pilot sitting to just the movement of him sitting -- no walking and no button pushing -- enough to feel natural, but at least half of this shot can go EXT. PALACE The ship flies off INT QUEEN SHIP DROID STORAGE OW leaves JJ with droids -- keep it all INT COCKPIT QG arrives (shave shot by half) As soon as he arrives, the pilot says (CUT TO Close up) "There's-..." CUT TO: Shot out the windshield "...the blockade!" Lasers pour at us CU of QG as OW arrives behind him More out windshield EXT. SHOT as ship flies up -- taking fire. CLOSE UP of shield generator hit INT. SHOT -- display of ship on dashboard; alarms; Pilot's Voice starts immediately OVER this image: "Shield..." CUT TO Close up of Pilot: "...generator's been..." CUT TO Alarm on the wall, (voice continues): "...hit!" Alarm continues-- INT DROID STAGING Droids pour out and start leaving. Artoo bumps JJ and leaves. (Shorten JJ's reaction shot, try to keep him from looking like he's talking) EXT. SHIP Droids work, get blown up INT COCKPIT OW says 'We're losing droids fast" Move Panaka's line to play out over QG's close up "If we don't get the generator up we'll be sitting ducks!" Pilot: shields are gone Artoo plugs in the bypass The display powers up. The Pilot notices -- but cut his line (he doesn't say "the power's back!")-- let his face talk Artoo welds the connection The pilot (seen from behind) "That little droid did it!" Over the Qui Gonn close up: "Deflector shields up at maximum"-- EXT DROID CONTROL SHIP The Queen's ship flies past the guns Artoo heads inside ADD A SHOT -- Droid fighters fly over the Control Ship toward camera (reverse shot from the battle at the end -- right after Padme gets captured and before Anakin says "We're hit artoo!") INT COCKPIT ADD SOUNDS OF BLASTS HITTING SHIELDS Display shows the hyperdrive -- pilot's voice says "not enough power, etc." Shot of pilot: 'The hyperdrive is leaking!" The rest of the shots play out -- WITH LOTS OF BOOMS AND BLASTS TO PUNCTUATE (They're calm attitude will now play like courage and confidence in the face of the enemy, instead of a strange dramatic lull.) QG says "that gives us the advantage..." CUT TO EXT QUEEN'S SHIP As it flies off fast enough to disappear from view-- outrunning any droid fighters behind it. CUT TO: INT. NUTE'S DROID SHIP Nute stands on the bridge with his flunkies (a "hologram removal" shot-- the first shot of the Nemoidian leaders talking to Sidious with Sidious removed -- like they're looking out the window CUT TO Close up of Nute Dialogue is more or less -- "I'm taking an awful risk, Vader. This had better work" -- No, wait... I mean Flunky: "The Jedi must have helped her. If she reaches the Senate..." Nute: "It makes no difference, we have already won. And I have made a deal so that she can never escape my reach..." WIPE TO: EXT SPACE The Queen's ship zooms by INT QUEEN'S SHIP Padme cleans Artoo and meets Jar Jar (we'll adjust JJ's dialogue to juice this up, but Amidala is SHOWING her gratitude to Artoo rather than TELLING us about it -- and she's meeting JJ which makes this a valuable scene) WIPE TO: A star field -- then we pan UP and see Tatooine. A flipped version of the opening shot of ANH -- a much more fitting intro of the planet than the little pea we see the ship flying toward in TPM. Pilot Voice Over: "That's it, Tatooine" ... CUT TO: INT COCKPIT Seeing the same Tatooine matte painting through the windshield Qui Gonn dialogue replace: "Space ports like this one are havens for people who don't wish to be found." Use instead of "land near the outskirts." EXT. TATOOINE The ship lands INT. QUEEN"S THRONE ROOM (It will take good dialogue mixing to make this scene work, but it will save us so much dead weight and activate a pretty dead scene, check it out Jedi, Artoo and Panaka stand before Queen. (I know the R2 damage has already been repaired, so let's not see him as much as possible) Use master shot first, but instead of hearing the Queen talk, we hear Qui Gonn dialogue as if his report is in progress-- "...Tatooine, [cut] Your highness. It's..." Med shot of Qui GOnn: "...in a system far beyond the reach of the Trade Federation." On Queen, her placid reaction: "Padme" she says. Padme crosses out from behind her... Close on Qui Gonn, observing silently On Queen: "Continue, Captain." Panaka turns to Qui Gonn : "Her highness... On Panaka (shot as he says "I do not agree..." etc. sync as well as possible): "...commands you to take her handmaiden with you." [ Cut away when the non-sync gets too obvious] Back to Master using this angle to cover the rest of Panaka's dialogue as he finishes Close on Qui Gonn (from when he says "trust me") his reaction is not defiant, but not happy -- "This is not a good idea..." he says. Try it a couple different ways to get the most resigned, but pessimistic reaction on his face. CUT TO (eliminate wipe) INT. SHIP Qui Gonn passes Obi Wan working on the hyperdrive. Use scene as is -- a disturbance in the Force. No communications. QG leaves and we a NEW THEME begins to play as we WIPE TO EXT. TATOOINE ...It's the "TATOOINE THEME" for Ep 1. InfoDroid, give us good Tatooine music like the droid hike in ANH -- maybe the same theme -- as this whole sequence all the way into Watto's shop is without dialogue and played for musical intro to Tatooine. Crop all shots so we can't see the city in the distance. Long Shot of QG, JJ, and R2 Med shot of same as they turn, reacting to someone behind them Long shot of Panaka leading Padme -- crop out the ship behind them CU Shot of Qui Gonn's face emoting "this is not a good idea" Med Shot of QG starting to walk again and Padme following as Panaka stays (crop out ship again) Long shot of QG, JJ, P and R2 walking toward distance (crop out city) Dissolve to same shot cropped different: this time shot is jus the horizon with the city, no figures walking in the foreground. WIPE TO QG leading group into town -- up to a point where two figures cross dramatically in the foreground (right before JJ steps in dog doo) -- CUT To QG et al walking straight toward camera, QG stops before us and looks screen left. CUT to The flipped/reversed second half of this shot (minus a little movement at the head) so that QG leads the group screen left toward some buildings -- CUT TO The Long Shot rising second half of the "walking into town shot" -- picking up where it feels natural in terms of how close JJ is to the troup. We pull up and back, seeing the whole city swallow them -- CUT TO INT. WATTO'S GARAGE ... (This is the scene where we meet Anakin. I want it to contain more drama between Anakin and Padme. One thing is to make their interaction more jagged -- less understanding politeness. Another is to introduce a trick that Anakin can use: he "Force talks" to Padme when he first speaks to her. She is impressed, but doesn't know what to make of it, and being with a couple Jedi -- she's not as freaked out by it as one of us would be, and I think her reaction looks appropriate. Suprised, impressed, interested, but confused and ultimately more concerned with other things.) INT. WATTO'S GARAGE Watto hums the Cantina theme from ANH -- the door "pings" and Qui Gonn enters, asking for J-Type parts. -- keep everything up to Q telling JJ not to touch anything -- then cut JJ's tongue gag. (a la "BotF") Padme looks around -- use the shot where Anakin says "Are you an angel" -- but CUT this line. Cut off the shot before Anakin's lip flap becomes too noticable. Leave the shot with out dialogue -- she's looking around, lost, interested... CUT TO: JJ inspecting the junk (the "handheld" shot -- probably the best Jar Jar effects shot in the movie) Then to the 2 shot of Padme and Anakin watching JJ Then JJ leans in and turns on a droid -- it runs around. Back to Anakin and Padme "Hey, hit the nose!" JJ catches the droid "what?" Back to Anakin "Hit the nose." JJ does it and the droid folds up. CUT TO: Close up of Anakin -- looking serious, staring at Padme (for this, use the last part of the shot where he says "I'm a person and my name is Anakin" -- he's staring hard at Padme). His voice comes over the shot -- "Force talking" accompanied by appropriate harp/Force music cue Anakin (V.O.) "Are you..." Padme turns to Anakin in shock -- "...an angel?" She stares and answers: "What?" Cut to Anakin: "An angel, I hear the deep space pilots talk about them. ..." CUT TO Padme's awed reaction: "... They're the most beautiful creatures in the universe." CUT TO Reverse angle; Padme says "How do you know so much." He answers her. Does his best acting in the movie. Use this shot all the way up to Anakin saying "mm-hmm. All my life." Padme's confused -- he's a pilot? But... CUT TO: Padme's skeptical close up: "You're a slave?" CUT TO: Anakin: "I'm a person, and my name is Anakin!" (Whoa. Easy there-- but before we get any calming down, we...) CUT TO: Qui Gonn dealing with Watto. Use the entire scene as is -- except the last shot is the close up of him pretending to smile to Watto -- no need to see him walking toward the shop again. CUT TO: Back to Anakin "...I wouldn't have lasted so long anyway, if I wasn't so good at building things." He's calmed down. Q enters. Etc. Use the whole scene -- except cut the "Yippee!" We'll adjust Watto's dialogue to be meaner, a la BotF. Maybe cut the JJ "double spin" as he leaves -- but everything else is good (after we adjust the music -- InfoDroid). ... MORE LATER
